Meridional volume transport in the South Pacific: Mean and SAMrelated variability

چکیده
Abstract The large increase in upper-ocean sampling during the past decade enables improved estimation of the mean meridional volume transport in the midlatitude South Pacific, and hence of the climatically important Meridional Overturning Circulation. Transport is computed using Argo float profile data for geostrophic shear and trajectory data for reference velocities at 1000 m. For the period 2004–2012, the mean geostrophic transport across 32 S is 20.66 6.0 Sv in the top 2000 m of the ocean. From west to east, this includes the southward East Australian Current (23.36 2.9 Sv), its northward recirculation (16.36 3.6 Sv), the broad interior northward flow (18.46 4.1 Sv), and the net northward flow (9.26 2.2 Sv) in opposing currents in the eastern Pacific. The basin-integrated geostrophic transport includes 7.36 0.9 Sv of surface and thermocline waters, 4.96 1.0 Sv of Subantarctic Mode Water, and 4.96 1.4 Sv of Antarctic Intermediate Water. Interannual variability in volume transport across 32 S in the South Pacific shows a Southern Annual Mode signature characterized by an increase during the positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode and a decrease during the negative phase. Maximum amplitudes in geostrophic transport anomalies, seen in the East Australian Current and East Australian Current recirculation, are consistent with wind stress curl anomalies near the western boundary.

The Mean and the Time Variability of the Shallow Meridional Overturning Circulation in the Tropical South Pacific Ocean
The meridional transport in the Pacific Ocean subtropical cell is studied for the period from 2004 to 2011 using gridded Argo temperature and salinity profiles and atmospheric reanalysis surface winds. The poleward Ekman and equatorward geostrophic branches of the subtropical cell exhibit an El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation signature with strong meridional transport occurring during La Ni~ na and...
متن کاملTropical Pacific–Driven Decadel Energy Transport Variability
The atmospheric energy transport variability associated with decadal sea surface temperature variability in the tropical Pacific is studied using an atmospheric primitive equation model coupled to a slab mixed layer. The decadal variability is prescribed as an anomalous surface heat flux that represents the reduced ocean heat transport in the tropical Pacific when it is anomalously warm. The at...
متن کاملEquatorial signatures of the Pacific Meridional Modes: Dependence on mean climate state
Extratropical atmospheric variability can impact tropical climate in the Pacific sector via the Pacific Meridional Modes (PMMs). The South PMM (SPMM) has a larger equatorial signature than the North PMM (NPMM) for the same amount of extratropical variability. Here we explain this interhemispheric asymmetry using an atmospheric general circulationmodel coupled to a slab ocean model. By imposing ...
متن کاملA Theory of Interdecadal Climate Variability of the North Pacific Ocean–Atmosphere System*
A linear coupled model for the atmosphere–upper-ocean system is proposed to highlight the mechanisms of decadal to interdecadal climate variability in the North Pacific. In this model, wind stress anomalies over the North Pacific are related to anomalies in the meridional temperature gradient of the upper ocean. The latter depends upon air–sea thermodynamical feedbacks and meridional heat trans...
متن کاملA Climatology of Diurnal and Semidiurnal Surface Wind Variations over the Tropical Pacific Ocean Based on the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean Moored Buoy Array
Hourly measurements from 51 moored buoys in the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean array (9°N–8°S, 165°E– 95°W) during 1993–2004 are used to document the climatological seasonal and annual mean patterns of diurnal and semidiurnal near-surface wind variability over the tropical Pacific Ocean. In all seasons, the amplitude of the semidiurnal harmonic is approximately twice as large as the diurnal harmonic...
